Winter Soul Days
Ski touring
Ski touring is also deeply ingrained in the DNA of the South Tyrolean mountain sports brand Salewa. With the 'Winter Soul Days,' Salewa aims to inspire people of all ages and skill levels to embrace ski touring in harmony with nature and like-minded enthusiasts.
A ski tour means discovering new things, exploring the unknown and rediscovering the familiar: sometimes the skis glide on their own - sometimes it's the mountain that accompanies them. But it also means experiencing and feeling nature in all its - often contradictory - facets: the soft powder snow under your feet, the sharp wind in your face, icy snow surfaces, rocks under your crampons, but also the rewarding feeling at the summit, and at the end the joy of making your downward turns in the snow and sharing these moments with like-minded people.
In addition to the captivating experiences in the mountains and the opportunity to be in perfect harmony with nature, ski touring offers an effective full-body workout with the ideal blend of endurance and strength. Not only do the thigh muscles get a workout, but the entire upper body is engaged, and the cardiovascular system receives an additional boost.
However, as wonderful as this form of outdoor activity may be, those venturing into the backcountry with touring skis need the necessary skills to handle winter-related risks.
This applies to beginners as well as more experienced tourers. Regardless of where you start, alongside physical fitness and stamina, having well-practiced ascension and descent techniques and suitable equipment is crucial. Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the outdoors take precedence before heading off-piste. This includes a sound understanding of avalanche risk assessment and competent handling of emergency equipment. For beginners, it is advisable to plan initial tours with ascents and descents on a designated trail.
The right equipment is the most important thing
Ski touring also means going into the terrain well-equipped. The basic equipment includes touring skis with touring bindings, skins and touring poles. You should also always have a helmet and ski backpack with you. The latter should at least be equipped with emergency equipment including an avalanche transceiver, probe and avalanche shovel, a first aid kit as well as provisions and, above all, plenty of water and a change of clothing. Speaking of clothing – there are also a few things to consider here. While you work up a sweat on the climb, your body cools down relatively quickly at the summit and is often exposed to very cold temperatures on the descent. But what do you actually need in terms of ski touring clothing and what do you have to take into account?
Depending on where you set your individual priorities, there are a variety of basic requirements that you should pay particular attention to when purchasing:
- Functionality of the materials (e.g. wind protection, water-repellent finish or even waterproofness, breathability, stretch, etc.)
- Feature set (e.g. ski edge protection on the pants, pockets, hood, ventilation slots, etc.)
- Fit
You should also think about how you can combine individual layers with each other due to the different weather and temperatures during a mountain tour. It's best to follow the so-called layering principle.
The layering principle of the new Sella ski touring collection from the South Tyrolean mountain sports brand Salewa offers exactly this flexible and reliable adaptation to any conditions, protection and comfort, warmth and breathability. The activity of “ski touring” can vary greatly depending on personal preference, the nature of the tour or the prevailing weather conditions. That's why Salewa's Sella collection offers a wide range of ski touring clothing, especially in the shell range. Starting with Durastretch softshell products through a technical hybrid shell outfit to the lightweight, 100% windproof and waterproof hardshell combination. The Sella collection from Salewa not only impresses with its high functionality and quality, but also in terms of sustainability.
My basic equipment for every tour always includes a suitable ski touring backpack, the volume of which I choose depending on the length of the tour. I can recommend the Sella 24-litre backpack from Salewa for extensive day tours.
